A Toast for Turkey
For those of us who struggle with the last-minute angst of arriving at a holiday feast empty-handed, one Albuquerque bakery has a unique solution: a baked-goods ATM.
The family-owned Golden Crown Panaderia in Old Town stocks its goodie-filled ATM with its famed empanadas (pumpkin is a good choice this time of year) as well as biscochitos and other sweets. Those items are always welcomed by hosts of any gathering, but they will always invite you back if you bring one of the bakery’s most beloved items: a loaf of Golden Crown’s green chile bread.
The green chile-infused dough is topped with fresh tomatoes, onions, cilantro, fresh parmesan, and a smattering of seasonings, which bakes additional flavors into the dough. The bakers also carve into the tops a doodle of a coyote howling at the moon, which turn the loaves into little works of art as they bake.
Pratt Morales opened the neighborhood bakery in 1972 and now runs it with his son, Christoper. The two manage to operate an adobe-housed bakery with New Mexico roots and traditions while keeping the business fresh with such innovations as a coffee roastery, local beers on tap, and, of course, the ATM that doles out goods that busy folks can pick up on the fly.
For a more immersive experience, patrons can purchase the bread inside the bakery or order ahead of time

Panaderia is one of the bakery’s most or need something after hours, drop beloved items. The green chile-infused by the 24-hour ATM, which also is dough is topped with fresh tomatoes, onions, continually restocked with flavored cilantro, fresh parmesan, and a smattering of
seasonings. and traditional biscochitos and other cookies, empanadas, and breads (options change daily). The bakery also runs a robust mail-order option, just in case those out-of-town guests who return home realize they can’t live without regular shipments of green chile bread.
The bakery’s turkey-shaped loaves (made from peasant dough and sculpted into the shape and size of a large roasted turkey) are another popular item but should be ordered at least a couple days ahead of pickup time (they’re in high demand this time of year). And for folks who are weary of turkey or other traditional trimmings, Golden Crown’s pizzas (especially the ones made with blue-corn crust) are worth the stop. — Carolyn Graham
